Long Beach Island

LBI, as Long Beach Island is known in the local lingo, is a beach lover’s paradise. Even at the widest point of this 18-mile-long island strewn with small shore towns and long stretches of white sand, you’re never more than half a mile from the other side.

In the north part of the island is Barnegat Light, which encompasses Barnegat Lighthouse and the commercial fishing port of Viking Village.

Also in the north are the relaxed towns of Brant Beach, Loveladies, North Beach, Holgate and Harvey Cedar.

Head south to find bustling Surf City, Ship Bottom and Beach Haven, the island’s main action center.

Here you’ll find the family-oriented Victorian Fantasy Island Amusement Park, a water park, Settler's Mill Adventure Golf and the Surflight Theater.

Beach Haven is home to Thundering Surf Water Park & Golf, which features eight giant waterslides, super soaker water guns, giant tipping bucket and much more. The town is also a popular shopping spot, especially the stores in the belly of the reconstructed tall ship at Schooner's Wharf.

 Don’t miss:

• The sweet confections at Chocolate Bar (Beach Haven) and Ron Jon Surf Shop (Ship Bottom) for beach essentials.

• A ride on the Crystal Queen paddle wheeler (Beach Haven)

Nature lovers:
It’s easy to find Barnegat Lighthouse State Park – just look for the 172-foot-tall, red-and-white lighthouse at the north tip of the island. Built in 1859, the lighthouse offers amazing views from the top – your reward after climbing the 217 steps.

On ground level, enjoy a picnic with sea vistas and breezes at tables all along the inlet. There’s also great fishing here, for flounder, sea bass and bluefish, among others.
