What You Can Do NOW at American Dream
Described as an “all-inclusive hub with a global hug,” American Dream is officially open for business—err, we mean fun! This mega-sized shopping and entertainment complex in East Rutherford is opening in stages, but there’s still plenty to see, do and experience now. Read on for details before planning your American Dream escape this winter.
Blade Action or Big Snow?
One of the first attractions to open, The Rink at American Dream is an NHL-regulation-size facility that offers open skating, figure skating, hockey tournaments and other events. Both hockey and figure skates are available for rental.
Of course, winter sport enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting the December 5 opening of Big Snow, where every day is a snow day. America’s only indoor ski park with real powder offers something for all ages and skill levels but focuses on helping first-timers feel comfortable on the slope. And how is that real-snow experience even possible? Big Snow uses high-pressured air and a fine mist of water to mimic how snow is made in nature. As the mist falls in the climate-controlled park, it turns to snow. Lessons, coaching and kids’ camps are available, as well as ski gear rental for learners and more experienced skiers.
A “Play Date” With Your Kid’s Favorite Nick Characters
Billed as the Western Hemisphere’s largest indoor theme park, Nickelodeon Universe features 22+ rides, rollercoasters and attractions, as well as live entertainment. The big draw is the chance for your kids to “play” with their favorite Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Blue of Blue’s Clues and Jimmy Neutron. Rides are categorized as thrill, family-friendly or “Nickelodeon Junior” and range from the heart-pounding Shredder, described as the “world’s tallest and longest free-spinning coaster,” and the Nickelodeon Slime Streak to Dora’s Sky Explorer and Blue’s Skidoo.
Coming Soon, the Big Splash
Opening soon, DreamWorks Water Park will be another one of American Dream’s larger-than-life attractions. Not only is it described as North America’s largest indoor wave pool, it will deliver an abundance of choices—with over 40 water slides and 15 attractions. A lazy river, a 1.5-acre wave pool and the world’s tallest indoor body slide (with a jaw-dropping 142-foot drop) are among the park’s highlights. If you prefer relaxing to splashing, you’ll be able to take advantage of luxury cabanas designed by New Jersey’s own Jonathan Adler. (For the latest opening date details, go to AmericanDream.com)
The Next Chapter
In March and throughout the 2020 spring season, other venues will open in grand style. You’ll be able to browse Saks Fifth Avenue, Hermès, Gucci, Uniqlo, Primark and Tiffany & Co., as well as choose from a range of dining options. What’s more, to support American Dream’s plan to offer visitors a mix of approximately half retail and half attractions, more experiences will launch in 2020, including SEA LIFE® Aquarium, LEGOLAND® Discovery Center, KidZania, a movie complex and a 300-foot-high observation wheel.
Check the American Dream website for the latest updates, hours and directions, as well as hotel and transportation options like express buses, NY Waterway ferries and NJ Transit. Parking is free (except for valet service and game days), and there is a rideshare zone.
