There’s so much to see and learn in Cape May that newcomers might not know where to start. One of the nation’s first seaside resort towns, this National Historic Landmark at the southernmost tip of New Jersey is renowned for its historic character. With over 600 late-Victorian homes, a handful of 19th-century lighthouses, cobblestone streets and great beaches, Cape May is both a step back in time and a charming modern respite. Join a walking tour—or four—to get a real sense of this historic peninsula set where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic.
Dr. Physick’s Neighborhood Walking Tour
The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities’ many programs, tours and events showcase the best of Cape May. Stroll Dr. Emlen Physick’s neighborhood on tree-lined Washington Street and hear about the families who lived there and the architecture of the homes that occupy the neighborhood near the grand 1879 Physick Estate, Cape May’s Victorian House Museum, during Dr. Physick’s Neighborhood Walking Tour. Explore one of Cape May's great mysteries - why the Doctor chose to live in this particular area of Cape May. You can also combine lunch or afternoon tea with your walk.
Food and Culture Walking Tour
What better way to get to know a place than through its food? Join up with Cape May Food Tours for either of their two foodie tours covering both Historic Downtown Cape May and West Cape May. In the former, you’ll find the Victorian architecture is as highlighted as the fare you’ll sample at six different sites, including cafes, coffee bars and al fresco dining on the oceanfront. On the West Cape tour, the focus is on farm-to-table and organic restaurants, with everything from empanadas to home-grown honey on the menu.
African American Heritage Walking Tour
The Center for Community Arts shines a light on Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad’s legacy in the area. Offered twice a week as well as by appointment, the Center’s African American Heritage tour highlights African American landmarks, contributions and exhibits.
