September on the Shore
With this summer’s amazing weather, New Jersey’s shoulder season offers even more to enjoy: quieter beaches, pleasantly warm days and plenty of things to do along the Jersey Shore. Plan a perfect a quick weekend getaway with these ideas to enjoy September on the Shore.
Bask in the sunshine or just enjoy the warmth on an outdoor patio. Dine alfresco at Blue Water Café in Beach Haven, where lobster rolls and bouillabaisse are a couple must-try dishes. At Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grill in Wildwood, sit on the waterfront deck to pair just-shucked raw oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp and freshly caught seafood with views of the marina. Or sit under an umbrella as you overlook the ocean, and nosh on shrimp cocktail, crab cakes and fish tacos at The Shrimp Box in Point Pleasant Beach.
Make the most of the last beach days of the season while you lay out or picnic on Atlantic City’s free beaches (no beach badge required), or stroll along the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk to take in the sights and sounds.
Stay active while taking bike ride along the 7-mile multi-use pathway at Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook, and enjoy the oceanfront views. While you’re here, go birding at the Horseshoe Cove salt marsh and see the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the country.
At Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, see the “Old Barney” lighthouse, walk along the Maritime Forest Trail and drop in a fishing line from the picnic area to see what saltwater fish you can reel in.
In Manasquan or Seaside Heights, go surfing to see if you can catch a wave, or just watch surfers in action while you sit along the shore.
Note: Most beaches do not require a beach badge and state parks do not have a parking fee after Labor Day weekend.
September is filled with a variety of festivals and special events. At the Sea.Hear.Now Music Festival in Asbury Park from September 21 – 22, 2019, watch the likes of The Lumineers, Dave Matthews Band and many more. Don your lederhosen and indulge in all kinds of traditional German beer and food at Oktoberfest at the Park in Oceanport on September 28, 2019. Or get your fill of creamy Guinness stout and all-manner of oysters at the Red Bank Guinness Oyster Festival on September 29, 2019.
Stay just steps from the sand and surf at one of the Jersey Shore’s many beachfront hotels. Now is the prefect time to check out the new Hotel LBI in Ship Bottom and watch the sunset on the rooftop. The Asbury Hotel is a hip hotel in Asbury Park with a rock-and-roll vibe, where you can enjoy two rooftop bars offering panoramic views of the town and ocean. For a cozy, intimate getaway, Minerva’s by the Sea Bed & Breakfast on Long Beach Island offers a quiet escape within walking distance of Barnegat Light Museum and Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. Or, revel in Victorian glamour when you stay at Cape May’s grand Congress Hall, the country’s oldest seaside resort.
