Summer Farm Fun

Historic barns, orchards of fruit-laden trees, picturesque pastoral landscapes—the charm of the countryside sets the scene for a day or even a weekend retreat that will transport you to simpler times. This summer, experience the fun of the farm with these outdoor activities.

Day Trips: U-Pick Farms, Farm Tours & More

New Jersey isn’t called the Garden State for nothing. Load up with fresh fruits at Alstede Farms in Chester, where you can pick-your-own strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and peaches. While you’re here, buy a ticket for a farm tour, which includes a hayride to the fields and orchards, a carrot bag to feed the farm animals and a refreshing glass of fresh lemonade or apple cider.

At Cherry Grove Farm in Lawrenceville, take an hour-long walking tour of the farm to learn all about the on-site cheese-making process and to learn about the native plants and ghost stories of the farm. While you’re here, take a hands-on cheese-making class to learn how to easily make your own ricotta, mozzarella and more at home.

For a farm-fresh dining experience, visit Cecil Creek Farm in Mickleton, where you can stock up on locally sourced fruits, vegetables, meats, honey, cheeses and more, or stop by The Café for farm-to-fork breakfast dishes, soups, salads and sandwiches.

Overnight Experiences: Farm Stay Inns

Looking to extend your stay and escape to the country for a while? Stay at the tranquil Woolverton Inn in Stockton, a bed and breakfast on 10 park-like acres nestled in the midst of farmland and forests.  Book one of the suites in the plush inn, and enjoy a three-course country breakfast in the morning before strolling the grounds.

If you’re an oenophile, consider a vineyard stay at Renault Winery in Egg Harbor City or the Inn at Laurita Winery in New Egypt.
