Maplewood

Just 30 minutes from New York City, weekenders will find a slower pace of living in the picturesque suburb of Maplewood, where tree-lined streets and Colonial style homes create a welcoming, hometown feel.

Book a room at one of the charming inns or bed and breakfasts, such as Les Saisons, and stroll the streets to explore the independently owned shops, art galleries and home stores in nearby Maplewood Village.

This small downtown commercial district hosts community events throughout the year, such as art walks, music festivals, sidewalk sales and parades. At night, catch a live theater production or dance performance at the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts.

During the summer months, there are even more things to do Maplewood, particularly in the great outdoors. Head to the Maplewood Farmers Market to shop locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as artisan made breads, pastries, preserves, cheeses and pickled goods.

For recreation, Memorial Park offers 25 acres of expansive grassy fields, playground areas, picnic tables, tennis courts and softball fields for a day of play in the sun. Walk along the winding paths and across wooden bridges over flowing streams.

For even more outdoor adventure, drive to South Mountain Reservation, the largest park in the Essex County Park System. This 2,110-acre public land features scenic hills, peaceful rivers, wooded hiking trails and sweeping vistas of New York City.
