Explore the funkier side of Cape May with a trip to the borough of West Cape May, a lively neighborhood of art galleries and studios, antique shops, independent boutiques and whimsical eateries.
Stay at the West Cape Motel, the closest motel to the acclaimed bird sanctuary and preserved wetlands at South Cape May Meadows and just six blocks from the beaches. Also nearby is Cape May Point State Park, where visitors can explore coastal trails and climb to the top of the Cape May Lighthouse for panoramic views of the peninsula.
Many of the charming buildings are painted in vibrant colors and feature colorful cascades of flowers and lush foliage accenting the exteriors. Stroll along Park Boulevard, Broadway and Sunset to browse the unique shops, where you could find the most unexpected goods, such as hand carved antique furniture, handmade birdhouses, beach themed linens, seaside souvenirs, specialty teas and much more.
During the summer, catch one of the many agricultural festivals, including the Strawberry Festival, Tomato Festival, Lima Bean Festival and the Tuesday evening farmer’s market.
Another fun way to experience the flavors of the region is to visit Willow Creek Winery, a 200-year-old, 50-acre farm located in the heart of West Cape May. Enjoy a 45-minute guided tour of the vineyard, and sample some of the winery’s delectable varietals, including Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
