3 Day Road Trip: Arts and Culture Tour

When you think of New Jersey, you typically think of its famous beaches. If you choose to venture off the coast, the state is home to a variety of culturally infused institutions and museums. A mecca of arts and culture, consider a three-day road trip that explores the world-class museums and galleries throughout the state.


Day One

Newark is home to the largest museum in the state, Newark Museum. With over 80 galleries and collections that include American, Asian, African and Classical art, the Newark Museum offers a multifaceted cultural experience. Take a stroll through the gardens and stop at the museum café for lunch. While in Newark check out the nearby historic sites which include the Dey Mansion, built in 1740 for military commander Colonel Theunis Dey, and the Isreal Crane House, home to the merchant that first constructed the New Jersey Turnpike.  Continue your cultural experience with a meal at Fornos Restaurant, which offers award-winning seafood from Spain.

Day Two

On day two, drive west towards Morristown and explore the Morris Museum. Self-proclaimed as the epicenter of art, science, culture and history in the state, the Morris Museum has a large scale collection ranging from rocks and minerals to model trains and musical instruments. The on-site Bickford Theatre offers plays, concerts and a variety of performances year round. After getting your arts fix, stroll through historic Morristown, which is rich in historic sites, parks and recreation spaces. Consider driving out to the Stickley Museum at Cratfsman Farm, a 20th Century country estate, or the Morristown National Historical Park. Day Three

On the final day of your road trip, head south to Princeton, New Jersey and immerse yourself in the arts and culture of Princeton University.  Check out the university’s art museum, which features a vast collection of contemporary art. Enjoy lunch at Olive’s Deli and Bakery, and spend the afternoon at the New Jersey State Museum and Planetarium in Trenton. End the trip reflecting on your new arts and culture knowledge over a meal at the Blue Point Grill.
