Luxury Mountain Retreat: A Winter Weekend Getaway in New Jersey

Enjoy skiing, snow tubing, fine dining, spa treatments and more in Vernon this winter.

After your drive, check into one of the many upscale hotels in the area, such as Mountain Creek Resort (comprised of The Appalachian’s slope side accommodations and Black Creek Sanctuary’s quiet townhome community), Crystal Springs Resort (comprised of the AAA 4-Diamond Grand Cascades Lodge and the family friendly Minerals Hotel) or Alpine Haus Bed & Breakfast Inn, a historic manor with country charm.

Once you’re settled, meander over to Crystal Tavern, a farm-to-table eatery located in the clubhouse at Grand Cascades Lodge. Tease your appetite with fresh raw oysters and a shrimp cocktail, and then move on to a colorful roasted beet salad and mouthwatering entrees such as a Tomahawk-style Berkshire Pork Chop served with apples and hazelnuts or a juicy hanger steak with chimichurri and frites.

Start your day on the slopes of Mountain Creek, where eight lifts will bring you up to four mountain peaks so you can ski or snowboard down dozens of trails, from easy beginner runs to challenging black diamond routes to freestyle terrain trails with features such as jumps and rails. The snow tubing park offers even more options for gliding down the mountain, with no equipment or experience needed.

If you’d rather stay indoors, you’ll find plenty of fun activities. Make your way to Minerals Sports Club and choose from fitness classes such as Zumba and yoga, swimming in the indoor pool, or playing tennis on the indoor courts.

After a day of active pursuits, get pampered with a relaxing spa treatment at Reflections Spa inside Grand Cascades Lodge. Ease muscle tension with a 50-minute Art of Reflection body massage, and then enjoy an exfoliating cinnamon brown sugar scrub for silky-smooth skin.

For dinner, make your way to the gourmet Restaurant Latour at Crystal Springs Resort to take in views of the Kittatinny Mountains while indulging in artful, seasonal dishes paired with exquisite wine from the expansive list at The Wine Cellar, which has won Wine Spectator’s Grand Award every year since 2006.

On your last day, spend a leisurely morning at Kites: An American Grille on the second floor of Minerals Hotel for breakfast favorites such as chocolate chip waffles, classic eggs Benedict and berry crepes.
