April 28 | Sentimental Journey Big Band performing “The Music That Won World War II”
Immerse yourself in melodies that once carried our nation through a pivotal moment in American history. Sentimental Journey Big Band is here to transport you back to the 1940s with the timeless sounds of swing and jazz in The Music That Won World War II.
Vocalist Altha Morton has appeared throughout the East singing Big Band, Jazz, Country, Gospel and Pop music. Some of her career highlights include national record releases, opening for Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, Johnny Lee and Mel Tillis. Sentimental Journey was formed in 1991 by Frank Richetti who played with the 2nd Marine Air Wing Band during World War II. Altha and Curt Morton currently direct Sentimental Journey Big Band, playing such favorites as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, American Patrol and In The Mood.
May 19 | James Austin, Jr.
James Austin, Jr. is an accomplished jazz pianist and bandleader who hails from Chicago. He has honed his craft under the tutelage of a number of legendary jazz musicians including extensive study with Barry Harris, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz educators of all time.
James’ musical achievements include being honored as a featured performer and semifinalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. He recently served as pianist and arranger for several star-studded concerts at Carnegie Hall under the baton of esteemed musical director, Ray Chew.
June 2 | Joel Zelnik Trio
Young pianist Joel Zelnik met the legendary pianist Bill Evans in the mid-1960s when they alternated sets at Greenwich Village’s Top of the Gate.
“My Bill Evans – A Personal Conversation” will feature the Joel Zelnik Trio celebrating the greatness of Bill Evans through the performance of signature Evans works and pieces by Zelnik that show the Evans influence.
Evans, who was born in Plainfield, NJ, is considered one of the most important and influential jazz pianists of all time. Zelnik, born in Elizabeth, has been appearing in New York and New Jersey jazz clubs for more than 50 years. His trio includes bassist Gary Mazzaroppi and drummer David Cox.
