Event Description

This year-long installation presents the sound sculptures of Wolfgang Gil in the context of abstract art from the Museum’s collection. Gil’s installations explore the sculptural quality of sound, inviting us to contemplate listening as a phenomenon. They create opportunities for experiencing external space as well as our internal perceptual processes. A Venezuelan-born American artist who lives and works in Newark, Gil employs sound as a malleable material with curves, edges, and changing geometries—a medium that can be stretched in all dimensions. Sonic Geometries showcases three of Gil’s large-scale sound sculptures, including one created in 2020 that will debut in this show. To explore the idea of sound in visual terms, Gil partnered with the Museum’s curatorial team to create a dialogue between his work and selections from the Museum’s collection. Sonic Geometries highlights geometric abstraction—a strength of Newark’s American art holdings—
