TRENTON, NEW JERSEY (February 28, 2022) – The largest collection of cherry blossoms in the United States, indoor wonders and outdoor adventures are just some of the ways to enjoy spring break in New Jersey. Kids, teens and their parents can continue to learn and explore at places like the Liberty Science Center or on one of Sussex County’s celebrated hiking trails this spring, keeping them entertained and engaged while away from the classroom.

Whether the family prefers indoor experiences or outdoor ventures, the Garden State has many interactive ideas to help visitors and residents alike plan an unforgettable spring break in New Jersey:

INDOOR WONDERS:
  • Paper Mill Playhouse – Millburn: Beginning March 24
Central Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse is an alternative to Broadway for theater lovers who enjoy the thrill of musicals and plays, but for a fraction of the price. Notable alumni of the program include Anne Hathaway, Shanice Williams, Rob McClure and many more. The upcoming season includes renditions of popular musicals, such as “The Wanderer” (from March 24-April 24) and “Sister Act” (from June 1-26).

  • American Dream – East Rutherford: Throughout March and April
The highly celebrated American Dream has elevated the New Jersey entertainment scene for families with activities, shopping and dining, galore. In addition to premier shopping, American Dream offers 22+ rides, rollercoasters, attractions and live entertainment, including beloved characters from SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues and more. Guests of all ages can ride coasters through Nickelodeon Universe with a magnificent view of the New York City skyline or go for a swim in the world’s largest indoor pool at DreamWorks Water Park, which is kept at a comfortable 81 degrees year-round.

  • Liberty Science Center – Jersey City: Throughout March and April
Liberty Science Center is a learning center featuring 12 museum exhibition halls, live animal collections, giant aquariums and the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere. The center’s latest exhibitions feature Paw Patrol, which offers daring rescues and activities, as well as an immersive Minecraft Exhibition, where visitors embark on digital quests and encounter life-size characters. Exhibits are friendly for guests of all ages.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES:
  • Burlington County/Mount Holly Parade – Mount Holly: March 5
March is also the time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and few states are as spirited as New Jersey, offering parades, entertainment and festive fare, such as green beer and corned beef and cabbage, throughout the month. The Burlington County St. Patrick’s Parade on March 5 offers Pipe Bands, Irish Step Dancers and other Irish-for-the-day traditions, producing a non-stop celebration for spectators.

  • Van Vleck House and Gardens – Montclair: March 16
The Garden Conservancy hosts over 100 gardens nationwide, and 18 of them are in the state of New Jersey. A nonprofit committed to historic preservation, the early 20th century Van Vleck House provides a rare opportunity to view a plethora of private gardens open to the public daily, free-of-charge. This 12-acre private estate was established more than 140 years ago; since, countless donors and volunteers have made the gardens accessible for guests to embrace the tranquility and beauty of the green spaces. On March 16, “Tales of the Trails: Signs of Spring,” invites guests to register and discover the wonders of the outdoors through a series of child-friendly nature walks and crafts.

  • Cherry Blossom Festival – Belleville and Newark: From April 2-10
Home to the largest collection of cherry blossom trees and the oldest county park in the United States, Branch Brook Park, located in Essex County, is home to one of the nation’s best Cherry Blossom Festivals. Visitors can marvel at the nearly 4,000 trees as they soak up the seasonal splendor. This year’s festival will be held from April 2-10, and it incorporates a 10K fun run, bike race, many family-focused activities, Japanese cultural activities, such as origami, bonsai, ikebana and martial arts, food and much more.

  • Pick Your Own Farms – Throughout South Jersey: Beginning in April
South Jersey is home to several farms, managed by the same family for multiple generations. While each farm experience varies, all offer a u-pick experience with flowers, produce and the opportunity to purchase fresh produce or baked goods. In April, spinach, broccoli, and tulips are in-season, and popular sites include Emery’s Farm in New Egypt, Sahl’s Father Son Farm in Egg Harbor City and Springdale Farm in Cherry Hill.

  • Birding – Throughout South Jersey: Beginning in April
The state’s diverse habitat makes South Jersey a major seasonal migration path for hundreds of species of birds like Great Blue Herons and American Robins. Spots like Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary in Stone Harbor and Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Galloway are a haven for birdwatchers due to the variety of distinct habitats. From highland mountains to pineland forests, the assortment of natural resources results in tremendous diversity in the state's wildlife, such as Red-bellied Peckerheads and Tufted Titmouse. The New Jersey Audubon offers numerous classes, from introductory birding classes and guided evening walks to preschool programs to learn about animals. Additionally, avid birders will flock to Cape May on May 14, where teams will compete in the prestigious World Series of Birding to see how many birds they can spot in a 24-hour period.

  • Sussex County Trails – Throughout Sussex County: Spring 2022
Whether looking to hike, bike, trail run or explore outdoor activities, Sussex County is home to three scenic trails: Wood Duck Trail, Appalachian Trail: Wantage Foothills and Timberdoodle Trail. The family-friendly trails range from 3.1 to 5.9 miles long and are perfect for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts at all skill levels. The trails allow visitors distinct opportunities for bird watching and wildflower gazing, while offering jaw-dropping views of the Delaware River. Situated 1,803 feet above sea level, a hike in High Point State Park in Sussex County provides for the highest elevation in the state and panoramic views of the surrounding three states.
