  • Overview

The arboretum is on the grounds of the former George Jay Gould estate, a National Historic Landmark, featuring Italian, Sunken, Japanese and Formal Gardens from circa 1900, plus a modern wellness garden, and sustainable landscaping practices including a New Jersey native plant garden, pollinator gardens, green roof and low-mow areas. The arboretum has small holly, sweet pepperbush, and magnolia collections. Located in the New Jersey pinelands, the plant collection includes many pines, oaks and other typical pine barrens species. Throughout the historic gardens, there are many centuries-old statues and sculptures from Europe. Top non-plant attractions are the Apollo Fountain (sculpted by John Massey Rhind in 1902), the wrought iron Eagle and Dragon Sculpture from the Paris Exposition of 1900, and the Japanese teahouse from the British-Japan Exhibition of 1910.
