Overview
Sandy Hook is within the Gateway National Recreation Area and draws some two-million visitors each year. In addition to its ocean beaches the park has a wide array of recreational and other outdoor activities.
The Park includes the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, Fort Hancock, Battery Gunnison, ocean beaches, five-mile paved pathway, surf fishing, biking, hiking, bird watching, boating, windsurfing, kiting, visitor center, picnic areas and more.
ACTIVITIES
Surf fishing is permitted at all beaches. Biking is a great way to see Sandy Hook, the five-mile long Multi-Use Pathway (MUP) starts at the park entrance and ends in Parking Lot M. Hiking trails begin at the Sandy Hook Visitor Center and at Area M near Nine Gun Battery.
Sandy Hook is also a prime spot for birding. Non-motorized boats can be launched from Beach Area C and Horseshoe Cove. Windsurfing and kite-boarding is best on the bay across from Beach Area C. Horseshoe Cove is popular with recreational boaters.
Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day at ocean side beaches. There are showers and restrooms; food and surfing are permitted.
Enjoy a blanket picnic on the beach or take a stroll around Fort Hancock, a National Historic Landmark. Call the Visitor Center for hours of operation and available tours.
Admission and entrance fees are charged per vehicle from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.
