Overview
Fralinger’s Salt Water Taffy, a James Candy Company, has been a staple of the Atlantic City Boardwalk for over 125 years. It all started in 1884 when Joseph Fralinger, a former glassblower and fish merchant, took over a taffy stand and started crafting his own recipe, starting with molasses. By the following summer, he was selling chocolate and vanilla, and quickly became known as the “King of Salt Water Taffy.” Eventually, he introduced 25 flavors—more than anyone else in town.
Fralinger also had the brilliant idea of boxing up the taffy so visitors could bring a sweet piece of Atlantic City home with them. The one-pound box became a huge hit and was so popular that he sold out immediately and had to source oyster boxes from local fishermen in order to keep up with demand. A box of salt water taffy is still the must-have AC souvenir today.
With its historic Boardwalk locations, vintage wood cabinetry and tin ceilings, Fralinger’s captures the charm of old Atlantic City. Step inside and you’ll candy and nostalgia all-in-one spot. Along with its iconic salt water taffy, the shelves are stocked with other sweet treats like chocolate covered pretzels and almond macaroons. Fralinger’s has been delighting locals and visitors alike for generations.
Atlantic City offers metered street parking, but it’s easiest to park at the casino’s paid parking garage.
