3 Day Road Trip: Outdoor Enthusiast

For the outdoor enthusiast, consider a three-day road trip throughout New Jersey’s wild places. Home to a surplus of waterways, as well as stunning hiking routes and rolling hills, there is no shortage of activities to fill your weekend.

Day One

Begin the weekend in eastern New Jersey and spend time along the beautiful Delaware River. Sign up for a river trip with the Delaware River Tubing Company, which offers guided tubing, rafting, canoeing and kayaking, as well as rentals. After a day on the river, drive into the local Frenchtown and stroll through the quaint streets before enjoying a delicious meal at the Frenchtown Inn. Plan to sleep outdoors at the Delaware River Family Campground for a memorable retreat nestled along the Delaware River in Delaware, New Jersey. Or, for indoor sleeping accommodations, check out The National Hotel in Frenchtown.

Day Two

Kick off day two with horseback rides throughout Jersey’s beautiful rolling hills. Check out the Spring Valley Equestrian Center in Newton for a day of horseback riding on the beautiful scenic trails of Sussex County. Hidden Trails is another option for guided horseback tours, offering trails throughout the property’s wild fields and woods with your own “Garden State cowboy.” While in Sussex County, consider a guided zip line tour suspended over 1,000 feet above Mountain Creek. Zoom Ziplines guarantees a safe and enjoyable experience for all.  Wind down at one of the serene bed and breakfasts in the area. The Whistling Swan InnThe Inn at Stony Creek and the Inn at Millrace Pond are all great options.

Day Three

Drive north, and end the weekend with an action-packed day at Mountain Creek. If you’re in town during the summer months, check out the waterpark and get wet and wild on some of the park’s many attractions, including the Tarzan swing, free-falling cliff jumps and the Colorado River Rapids. The Mountain Park Bike Park is another great summer option for the adrenaline junkie in your group. In the winter months, strap on your snowboard or skis and enjoy the 167 skiable acres at Mountain Creek. The all-mountain terrain park is a great place to practice your skills and was recently named a Top 5 Park in Freeskier’s 2012 Resort Poll.
