In a season filled with joyous celebration, Trenton has reason to be in a particularly festive mood. The Capitol City is proud to present Patriots’ Week ’09 – the annual salute to Trenton’s pivotal role in the American Revolution.
Presented by the Trenton Downtown Association (TDA) and running December 26-31 at various venues around the city, Patriots’ Week attracts thousands of visitors every year, offering an abundance of activities for history buffs and cultural enthusiasts alike. Daily events include art displays, literature readings, cinema offerings, tours of historic sites, battlefield reenactments, living history events, live performances and more.
“We’re fond of saying that the history of New Jersey is the history of America, and perhaps no other event illustrates this fact more clearly than Patriots’ Week,” noted Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells. “With children off from school, the timing couldn’t be more perfect for families, and Patriots’ Week provides them with a week full of exciting and educational activities celebrating Trenton’s critical role in the nation’s founding.”
Widely acknowledged as one of the premier historical and cultural gatherings anywhere in New Jersey and the greater Northeast region, Patriots’ Week recently won an Award of Recognition by the New Jersey Historical Commission.
Patriots’ Week also highlights some of Trenton’s most historic and popular venues. The State House will offer exclusive civics and “hidden treasures” tours; Patriots’ Theater at the War Memorial will host the popular and hilarious political satirists Capitol Steps and the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra; the Old Barracks Museum will feature tours and reenactments, including A Call to Arms – Muster into George Washington’s Continental Army and Meet the Soldiers!; while the newly reopened and renovated State Museum will feature NJN Film Legacy Series presentations of The Two New Jerseys, The Republican Rebellion, Crossroads to Victory, and Fireside Kitchen: Colonial Christmas.
