Experience History
So many Northern New Jersey American Revolution Destinations are right here in the town where General George Washington and his troops encamped hundreds of years ago. The biggest military must-see is the Morristown National Historical Park – a four-in-one landmark with Ford Mansion (closed for renovations), Jockey Hollow, Fort Nonsense and The New Jersey Brigade all in one location. Step back in time with a guided tour to see the spot where the Continental Army survived what would be the coldest winter on record. Or hit the park’s hiking trails and soak in the breathtaking autumn scenery.
Shout Encore
Experience the best in entertainment at Mayo Performing Arts Center, the cultural hub of the Skylands. The center’s jam-packed calendar boasts world-class musical concerts, family-friendly theater, dramatic dance performances and cackle-out-loud comedy shows. This fall, catch big-name tours like Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Ben Folds, kid favorites like Blippi and the Encanto sing-along concert, as well as appearances from sports broadcaster Bob Costas, comedian Craig Ferguson, journalist Fareed Zakaria, and more.
Ignite Your Mind
Dive into the depths of knowledge at the Morris Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate. Fuel your intellectual curiosity with permanent collections like the extraordinary Guinness Collection of Mechanical Music & Automata, which features mechanical marvels spanning 400 years. The museum also hosts a captivating array of rotating exhibitions, so you’ll discover something new each time you visit. This fall, mark your calendar for the New Sculpture/New Jersey exhibit opening September 20th and Passport, an exhibition mapping the cultural journey of the Guinness Puccini Musical Box, starting October 4th.
Go Green
One of only two remaining “greens” in New Jersey, Morristown Green is a serene spot to gather and enjoy the cool fall weather. First appearing on maps back in 1715, this green played an important role in Morristown – and American – history. The entire town was built around it and, during the Revolutionary War, citizens met here to voice their opposition to British rule. Three centuries later, you can still sit under the changing fall leaves and consider your place in history. Another perfect spot for quiet contemplation, The Frelinghuysen Arboretum offers benches and walking trails. The views here change with the seasons and this time of year the gardens are bursting with autumn hues.
Feel Festive
Don’t miss the premier fall festival of Northern New Jersey. An annual tradition, Morristown’s Festival on the Green is back again on September 29th. Each year the festivities bring more than 60,000 attendees right downtown for live entertainment, tasty treats, 150 vendors and old-fashioned fall fun for all ages. Later on, the town gathers again for a family-friendly Oktoberfest celebration at the local firehouse. With free admission, all are welcome for an autumn event with brats, beer and live bands on October 5th.
Celebrate the Harvest
Spend the day at 100-year-old, family-owned Wightman Farms for a taste of that picturesque autumn atmosphere and a basketful of family fun. With scenic hayrides, a giant corn maze to explore and a bountiful orchard with apples ripe for the picking, the farm’s weekend fall experience is a can’t-miss this season.
